What benefit can you gain from having a facilitator lead family meetings?

– more productive time spent
– constructive conversations
– focus
– avoid personality issues/conflict

Families will often try to run family meetings themselves. This does not always work out. What often happens is that the family discussion falls into business operational rather than strategic matters. We are all busy and these together meeting times are important and precious so the time spent should be respected and productive. Operational discussions and decisions should be for other meetings.

A well trained facilitator, properly briefed, can ensure that the meeting objectives are well defined and progress is made during the meeting. A facilitator should not take sides, thereby enabling the family to discuss the issues at hand freely. The facilitator also can help frame an issue, summarize the potentially differing views and help the family advance.

Next family meeting, consider engaging a facilitator.
