You create your own circumstance and decisions.  The banner is a poster from Robert Herjavec, one of the investors on the TV show the Shark Tank.  Succession is a plan that is not forced upon you until you have to act.  Therefore, much like I try to do, carpe diem, sieze the day and do something about your succession plan and your life goals and objectives.  Get a start today and try to forumulate some plans and make headway.

I have surveyed and read the litany of literature about succession and succession planning.  Trying to boil all of it down, is the simple maxim that you have to start and begin somewhere.  I have discussed in some detail about how to commence and some of the key considerations in earlier posts on my blog perspective.  I encourage you to have a look at some of these blog posts.

A couple of potential starting points for consideration
1. get organized – do you know what you own (tangible and intangible assets) and what you owe?
2. have a conversation – when did you last have the conversation about what will happen upon your demise
3. review your estate planning documents – including your will. Do they reflect what your wishes are? or as for many, are they years out of date as your circumstances and life have changed?
4. what is your enterprise strategy – is this clear and has it been communicated?
